Some identical twins are known to do several things in common, but finding a pair who graduate with the same CGPA—especially as the best graduating students—is extremely rare. Yet, Busoye Opegbemi Matthias and Busoye Tolulope Matthew, twin brothers, broke that record during the 2023/2024 academic session at the University of Ibadan (UI).

Things they share in common
Born on the same day, enrolled in school on the same day, passed their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) the same year, wrote and passed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) the same year, chose the same institution, the same course of study, in the same department, in the same faculty—and passed with flying colours.
During their years in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Ibadan, their lecturers may have had to double-check their marks to ensure no errors were made while grading their scripts.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a five-year course at UI. Both brothers had nearly identical GPAs at the end of each academic session.
When Matthias scored 3.84 in 100 level, Matthew had 3.89, according to a tweet shared by one of the brothers. Their remarkable academic performance continued in 200 level, as Matthew earned 3.94 and Matthias 3.92. In 300 level, Matthias edged slightly ahead with 3.95, just two points above Matthew’s 3.93. In 400 level, Matthias had 3.94 while Matthew had 3.93. They both rounded off their 500 level head-to-head with identical 3.94 GPAs—graduating with first-class honours, each with a CGPA of 3.94 out of 4.00.
Excos on campus
The Busoye brothers didn’t just share academic excellence—they also held leadership roles during their time on campus. Matthias served as the Honourable Speaker of the UI Students’ Representative Council (UISU-SRC, 11th Assembly), while Matthew was the President of SEEEES-UI for the 2023/2024 session.
A national celebration
Their academic feat has captured national attention, with thousands of Nigerians sharing their story. It has been published by nearly all major national dailies and featured on several online platforms.
Their department’s professional body, the Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Students (SEEEES-UI), also joined millions in celebrating the brothers’ academic audacity.
