Benefits of Linking Student Loan Portal With Schools’ Websites

The Executive Director of Operations at the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mustapha Iyal, says plans have been finalized to integrate the student loan portal with the websites of higher institutions across the country.

According to him, the move aims to simplify the verification process for applicants and reduce the burden on schools, which currently face the challenge of conducting double screenings for students.

Iyal stated this during a sensitization program held at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, during the week.

The NELFUND official hinted that integration would significantly reduce verification problems faced by applicants.

The benefits of linking the NELFUND portal to schools’ websites, according to Iyal, include:

1) It will allow students to select their preferred method of payment when paying tuition fees. The University of Ibadan has already implemented a similar system, enabling students to choose between NELFUND, cash, or other payment methods directly from their school’s registration process.

2) Students will no longer need to visit the NELFUND portal separately to pay their school fees, making the process more efficient.

3) It will eliminate the issue of double payments, where NELFUND disburses tuition fees after an applicant has already paid from their pocket.

4) The process will help reduce the occurrence of school fee refunds caused by double payments.

5) The application process will become seamless, as the workload on student affairs units handling loan-related issues such as “record not found” will be reduced.

6) If successfully implemented, the loan will become more accessible to students facing financial difficulties in paying tuition fees.

Since NELFUND launched its portal in 2024, one of the major challenges students have faced is verification. In most cases, the issue originates from the institutions, thereby depriving some undergraduates of this life-changing opportunity.
