The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences (also known as FUMMSA) was established on April 11, 2023, following signing into law by President Muhammadu Buhari the bill proposing the establishment of the health-specialized higher institution in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
History
The bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (SB.684 PDF file), was sponsored in 2018 by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, who represented Ogun Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019. The bill was first read on the floor of the Senate on June 1, 2018.
On July 18, 2018, the proposed University was among the 10 bills that passed the second reading in the Senate. It was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Health.
Interestingly, Lanre Tejuoso was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health at the time, which allowed the bill to progress smoothly with the support of committee members. However, he could not push it further as he failed to secure his party’s ticket for re-election. His successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun (a two-term governor of Ogun State who represented the same constituency from 2019 to 2023), continued advocating for the bill in the Senate.
On June 23, 2021, the proposed university passed the third reading in the Senate and was approved for establishment. It was among the bills sent to the President for assent.
On April 11, 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari signed FUMMSA bill into law, officially establishing the university. The President also approved a take-off grant of N5 billion for the institution.
On July 12, 2023, the Egba Economic Summit, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of Egbaland, led by Chief Shina Luwoye, announced that Senator Amosun had provided 350 hectares of land for the university’s permanent site.
Additionally, apart from Tejuoso, Amosun, and the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who played key roles in securing a federal university for Egbaland, Chief Luwoye also credited Professor Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, for his contributions to the establishment of the university.
On August 7, 2024, President Bola Tinubu appointed a five-member governing council for the medical-specialized university.
On March 11, 2025, Tinubu appointed the institution’s four principal officers, including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, and Librarian.

There are 58 departments in FUMMSA, although the Vice-Chancellor of the institution disclosed that they would begin with Nursing and Medicine by September 2025.

The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences is using a temporary site located at: FUNNAB Campus, Alabata Road, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

It depends how competitive the department is. If most of the applicants that put in for the same course as you scored above 300, then your chances are very slim and vice versa.
