An applicant for student loan asked: How can I request a refund if NELFUND has already paid the same tuition fee I paid for?
If you applied for a student loan but, due to the urgency of an approaching semester examination, decided to pay your school fees yourself—only to receive a notification from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) a few days later that your tuition has been disbursed to your institution—you will need to request a refund from your school.
This situation affected many students who applied for NELFUND during the 2023/2024 academic session. In fact, some students even received their loan disbursement after completing their semester examinations.

If you find yourself in this situation, it means your school has received two payments for the same session’s tuition. To correct this, you must formally request a refund from your institution.
Now that NELFUND has moved on to the 2024/2025 application window, if your 2023/2024 tuition was disbursed late after you have made payment, here’s how to write a letter requesting a refund from your institution.
Documents for NELFULD Refund
To request a refund, you are to submit a letter to the Bursar through the Dean, Students’ Affair Unit (SAU), accompanied by the following documents as references:
- A copy of the receipt for the session you are requesting refund for
- A copy of receipt from NELFUND (you can get transaction ID from your NELFUND portal)
- Your bank account details

Request for Refund of 2023/2024 School Fees
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally request a refund of my tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic session. I had initially made the required payment of N95,870.00k for my tuition fees; however, I later got a notification that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) also processed and paid the same fees on my behalf.
Given this situation, I kindly request a refund of my personal payment since my tuition has now been covered through the NELFUND initiative. I have attached copies of the relevant payment receipts and supporting documents for verification.
My bank account details for the refund is:
Name: Josephine Ehanuwhon
Bank: First Bank of Nigeria (FBN)
Account Number: 0098098090
I would appreciate your prompt attention to this request and any guidance on the refund process. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Josephine Ehanuwhon

This letter is also available free for download. You only need to change person details and address. You can get a downloadable copy of it here.
Also, you need to follow up on the letter after submitting it at the NELFUND Desk of the student affairs unit. Most institutions such as UNIBEN now have NELFUND desk dedicated to attend to issues related to student loans.
NELFUND Refund at BUK
The NELFUND refund process at Bayero University Kano (BUK) is simple and straightforward, as the institution has integrated the NELFUND link into the student payment portal.
At BUK, you do not need to write a formal letter as outlined earlier. Instead, simply log in to your student registration account, navigate to the NELFUND Refund menu, and submit your bank account details.
Important: The name on your bank account must match the name on your school portal. According to a statement from the Public Affairs Directorate, BUK will not accept third-party accounts. This only applies to the second batch of the 2023/2024 session, so refund for 2023/2024 has closed. The NELFUND refund will reopen at BUK at the end of the 2024/2025 application window.
