As the world gradually transitions into generative AI, Nigeria’s Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology (FMIST) has partnered with the Commonwealth Secretariat and several global technology-driven firms, leading to the launch of a free Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy for Nigerians.
The AI Academy, which will offer free training and lead to award of AI Certification, is part of the initiative led by the Minister of FMIST, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, to fully implement the National Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) goals, with a focus on equipping Nigerians with AI skills.
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the development of computer systems designed to perform tasks that require human intelligence. According to Google Cloud, AI enables computer to perform a variety of advanced tasks. You can read more about AI on platforms such Cloud, Wikipedia, IBM, and TechTarget among others.
You may have heard about ChatGPT by OpenAI, Copilot by Microsoft, and Gemini (formerly Bard), a chatbot developed by Google. They are AI applications.
Benefits of the Academy
1) It provides free access to fundamental AI concepts, including real-world applications and ethical practices.
2) Participants will gain first-hand knowledge on how to positively explore AI for societal transformation and solve everyday problems.
3) Beyond understanding how generative AI works, the program offers trainees an opportunity to develop innovative skills using AI tools.
4) The free training will empower participants to compete in AI-related competitions within Nigeria and apply for millions of AI-related jobs worldwide. For example, there are numerous Large Language Model projects on LinkedIn and other professional platforms.

7) Undergraduates from higher institutions will be eligible to compete for the AI Ambassador role. According to the ministry,
“Ambassadors will gain advanced training and access to exclusive opportunities, such as internships with Intel Corporation.”
