WAEC Introduces WASSCE PC1 Exam To Allow Candidates To Quickly Re-Sit for Failed Subjects

Starting January and February 2025, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that candidates who failed certain subjects in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be able to retake the affected subjects.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed this during an appearance on the popular TV programme JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on New Year’s Eve.

The new initiative, dubbed WASSCE PC1 exam, allows students to quickly re-sit subjects in which they received poor grades instead of waiting for the next private examination cycle.

How WASSCE PC1 Works

WASSCE PC1 offers a faster route for students to improve their grades.

After checking their results, students who discover poor grades can register for only the affected subjects on the WAEC portal or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés. Registration closes on January 8, 2025.

According to WAEC, the exams are scheduled to take place from January 24 to February 15, 2025.

Kapi stated that WAEC plans to expedite the release of chief examiners’ reports, which provide detailed feedback on students’ performance, highlighting areas where they may have gone wrong. These reports also include recommendations on how students can improve their approach to studies and the examination process.

WAEC says it has advertised the new programme on its website, results checker platform, and through other marketing channels “to ensure that both students and parents are aware.”

WAEC excludes Nigeria from the resit exam

However, Nigerian candidates are excluded from the exercise. The examination body made this known in a post on its X Wednesday, saying:

“Please Note: The news circulating about WAEC conducting a “resit examination” for candidates is not applicable to Nigerian candidates. However, candidates with outstanding grades can register for WASSCE (PC1) 2025 that commences soon.”

Who Can Write the WASSCE PC1 Exam?

1) Students who wish to improve grades in specific subjects.
2) Students whose results have been cancelled.

Can Nigerian candidates register for the WAEC resit examination?

The “resit examination”  is not applicable to Nigerian candidates. The examination body made this known in a post on its X handle.

Who Cannot Write?

Students banned due to malpractice.

Where Will It Be Conducted?

The exams will be held in regional capitals due to the limited number of candidates, according to WAEC.

Which country can register for the WAEC “resit examination”?

Candidates in Ghana, Liberia, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone can take the resit examination. Nigerian candidates are excluded for now.

Will the WASSCE PC1 be CBT?

The objective papers will be fully computer-based (CBT), while the essay and test of practical examinations will be a hybrid examination where the questions will be displayed on the screen and the candidates will write their answers on answer booklets.
