The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has designated 11 centres across Nigeria for the 501 visually impaired candidates scheduled to sit the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The centres, located in Lagos, Kano, Ado-Ekiti, and other cities, will host the exams on April 28 and 29.
Chairman of the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), Prof. Peter Okebukola, who addressed newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, said the candidates would sit the same test papers and be held to the same academic standards as their sighted counterparts, covering a total of 20 subjects.
Breakdown:
Lagos has the highest number of candidates, with 107, followed by Kano with 91. Abuja will host 41 candidates, while Ado-Ekiti has 32.
According to Okebukola, the Lagos centre will be coordinated by the former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun.
The former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Prof. Muhammad Bello, will coordinate the Kano centre.
While highlighting the success rate of JEOG candidates in 2024, the renowned academic disclosed that approximately 70 per cent of visually impaired and albino candidates secured admission into various tertiary institutions.
He also stated that 84 visually impaired candidates who achieved at least five O’Level credits in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) would have their UTME registration fees refunded at their respective examination centres.
About JEOG:
The JEOG was established in 2017 to ensure a fair and inclusive UTME process for visually impaired and other special needs candidates.
Okebukola described JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, as a strong advocate for equal access to higher education.
