The minimum admission score for gaining entry into universities is 150, while it is 100 for candidates seeking admission into polytechnics, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said on Tuesday.
The examination body made the announcement in Abuja during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

On its X handle, JAMB outlined the cut-off marks across all higher institutions as follows:
- Universities – 150
- Colleges of Nursing Sciences – 140
- Polytechnics – 100
- Colleges of Agriculture – 100
- Colleges of Education – 100
- Controversy Over Cut-off Mark
In the meantime, the cut-off marks—which JAMB described as the ‘admissible score’—were the decision of the heads of institutions across the country.
In reaction to a tweet by one Salako (@UnkleAyo), who queried JAMB for setting a low standard with 150 marks for university admission:
“The registrar of JAMB is admittedly saying that he’s incapable of maintaining the academic standard of the examining body. This man has done enough to be asked to hands off directorial duties. Why make the cutoff mark 100? Why not make it 50 and 22 for the North?”
JAMB clarified, saying:
“Kindly note that JAMB didn’t set the minimum admissible scores; heads of institutions did.”
Similarly, the Federal Government has pegged the minimum admissible age for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria at 16 years.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions.
He disclosed that the age requirement will be enforced through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), with efforts made to accommodate candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025.
