The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has barred eight universities in Nigeria from admitting law students into their Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme for the 2025/2026 academic session.
Affected institutions are:
- Redeemers University, Ede, Osun State;
- Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State;
- Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State;
- Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State;
- Taraba State University, Jalingo, Taraba State;
- Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, Cross River State;
- Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State;
- Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Ilorin, Kwara State.
This was revealed on Wednesday when the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) disclosed that it would also not conduct admissions for the Law programme in the affected universities for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The Council of Legal Education (CLE), the regulatory body overseeing legal education in Nigeria, grants approval to Law Faculties and manages Law Schools nationwide.
Reasons for Suspension
Institutions offering Law programmes must obtain CLE clearance even after securing accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC). Approval from the NUC for new programmes does not override the requirement for professional clearance from bodies like the CLE.
If an institution violates legal education guidelines, the CLE holds the authority to revoke its admission privileges for Law programmes.
Implications
The suspension means aspiring law students cannot gain admission to these universities for the 2025/2026 academic session. However, existing law students in the affected institutions will not face disruptions to their studies or graduation.
JAMB’s spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, clarified that the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, faces a two-session embargo (2025/2026 and 2026/2027).
An anonymous lawyer suggested the universities may have failed to secure CLE clearance, breached admission guidelines, or lacked the capacity to adequately train law students.
